The banquet is held in aid of the schools "Reach Across" community education programme.

The lodges that participate are a never-ending source of creative energy, and the presentation of kitchens, tables and food is a true reflection of their exceptional talent and dedication.

The atmosphere in the kitchen arena, sited in the bush on the outer rim of the school, is always one of fun and camaraderie. With smoke fires burning and the hustle and bustle of guests and judges viewing the contestant's efforts. People are welcomed into the bush kitchens with drinks and snacks. This year there were no less than 43 international guests from the UK, France, Holland, USA, Norway and Germany who were specially visiting South Africa in order to attend the Bush Banquet.

The Banquet is judged by a formidable panel of local and international food connoisseurs. The contestants are not only judged on their food capabilities, but also their knowledge of food and wine combinations, service at the tables, the layout and presentation of their tables and the kitchen layout and operation.

This year, Umlani entered jointly with Alan McSmith Safaris and we are proud to say that we dominated the Silver Category by winning first prize for best food (Umlani), fist prize for best food and wine combination (Umlani) and first prize for best table decoration (Alan Mc Smith Safaris). This year's chefs consisted of Eliza and Ruth guided by Nina. The Table decoration and service was done by Sarah McSmith, assisted by Thembi and Gertie from Umlani. 

Umlani is so proud of the team, especially since we have won Best Food prizes at the Bush Banquet for the last three years in a row! 

A special thank you goes out to Sarah McSmith for all her help and her inspirational table decoration. Thembi and Gertie have learnt so much from this experience, as well as for her wicked gin and tonic sorbet that the guests went crazy for!!! Well done!
